The LG GW880 is LG’s first Android device, and though we were once eager to see what LG was cooking with Android, the GW880 is another WiFi-less device that runs China Mobile’s Ophone. Soon to be available in China, LG planned to release its LG GW880 smartphone with China Mobile’s OPhone OS. The device will be preloaded with OPhone OS, a version of Google’s open-source Android that has been approved by the Chinese government. Featuring iPhone-like interface and the company’s mobile software store called Mobile Market. OPhone SDK is compatible with Android SDK, Android software can be easily used on OPhone platform with the same API. China Mobile’s OPhone OS offers the company’s mobile software store called Mobile Market which is based on Android OS, featuring iPhone-like interface. “Android” this case means China Mobile’s custom WiFi-less OPhone platform, which means we’ll probably never see this guy outside of the Middle Kingdom. The LG GW880 supports China’s 3G connection (TD-SCDMA)/EDGE. The smartphone is a high-end one, as it comes with a 3.5 inch WVGA touchscreen display, 5MP camera with flash, Mobile TV, 512MB ROM and 256MB RAM. Like on other OPhone handsets, users can download applications from the Mobile Market portal. The Software Development Kit (SDK) for both the OPhone OS and Android OS is the same, so applications written for either will work on the other. A release date or pricing information for the GW880 in China remain unknown.
