Twitter has announced that it will introduce the ability for users to share location information. The new ability comes from a new API for developers that will add longitude and latitude to any tweet. Those with privacy concerns have no reason to worry. Location based information will be turned off by default. If you want to be able to share your location you will have to turn it on. Twitter imagines a time where users will be able to follow each other based on geographic location. The new locaton enhancement will first be introduced to platform developers before it is added to Twitter. The introduction of location based information is a natural evolution for Twitter. Just about every mobile phone these days includes GPS location information. It makes perfect sense there would be people who would share this information in the hopes of finding others in the same vicinity. Once this feature is introduced to Twitter we could see the ability to follow people by neighborhood. Read more at the Twitter blog
